The concept of talent is a thread that runs through all areas of life from the arts to science and industry. It is a notion regularly referred-to in design magazines, where journalists assume that the word's meaning has been definitively agreed upon. However, despite its mention so frequent, the concept is rarely the sole subject of discussion. Current dictionary definitions state talent as 'mental endowment', 'natural ability' and even 'something divinely entrusted to a person'. This led me to question the definition's relevance in today's creative industries, and urged me to unpick where the meaning was strong, and where it could be strengthened. This work is a collection of interviews with creative professionals from the Fashion, Art & Design industries. By first discussing the practical implications of talent, I hoped to receive a more considered answer when asking explicitly for a definition of the word. |
